Legislators Try to Shore Up Campus Data Security Holes
A computer malfunction this spring at the University of California system made the personal data of more than 2,000 students available to all students. When students logged onto the UC network to update their contact information, they were able to access information about other students, too. The incident was one of several across the country in the past two years that have intensified state and federal lawmakers’ concerns about campus data security, especially the potential for theft of students’ identities.

Tally of Clery Act Violators Grows
As of late May, the U.S. Department of Education has found 560 schools in violation of the Jeanne Clery Act, including 123 since mid-2002.

Want to Increase Graduation Rates? Treat Students Like Human Beings
A multifaceted effort helped Louisiana Tech boost a 35 percent six-year graduation rate to 55 percent — nearly 10 percentage points higher than the median rate among peer institutions — in just five years. Pamela Ford, Tech’s dean of enrollment management, gives part of the credit for Tech’s increased rates to the 1992 advent of selective admissions and subsequent increases in admissions standards. But that doesn’t account for all of the increase, she said.
