Student Advisory Board

The Student Advisory Board of the National Center for Student Life is a new one-year leadership development program that will offer 10-12 exceptional student leaders an exclusive opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills. In addition to participation in a unique small group leadership development experience with the director of the National Center for Student Life and top student leadership development experts, SAB members will learn through the experience of serving as ambassadors, providing input and feedback on conferences and products, and sharing their ideas and insights in a unique blog by and for student leaders.

SAB Members develop leadership skills through and are expected to participate in the following activities:

A monthly Leadership Hangout (via Google Hangout or Skype) including:

  • Guided discussion of brief advance reading or viewing assignment on topics related to:
    - Values-based leadership models
    - Facilitation and engagement methods such as appreciative inquiry
    - Social innovation for leading change
  • All study materials will be provided at no cost to members.
  • Participants share progress reports on applying new concepts.
  • Peer learning addressing the challenges faced in campus leadership roles
  • Conference planning and product input (may also include online surveys)

National Conference on Student Leadership

  • Attend at least one Conference per term (includes free conference registration; does not include travel/lodging)
  • Serve as a highly visible ambassador (includes free NCSL apparel)
    - Greets participants and directs them to meeting rooms
    - Serves as liaison for participants with any concerns
    - Promotes engagement through personal interactions and social media
    - Acts as role model for professional conference behavior
    - Helps collect feedback from participants on site
  • Attend special leadership development sessions
  • Facilitate peer learning sessions

Student Leadership Blog

  • Submit two blog articles (one per semester)
  • Review peer drafts and provide feedback

Reflection on Learning

  • Submit 2-3 page essay at the conclusion of the board term describing what has been learned, how it has been applied, and the impact of the SAB experience on the member.

Upon successful completion of the term, SAB members will receive a digital badge documenting their achievement, as well as a letter of commendation.

Requirements for participation:

  • Previous NCSL Conference participation (preferred)
  • Successful Certified Student Leader® program completion (on-site or online)
  • Completed application form including a description of your ethical leadership and change agency on campus or the community
  • Submit an essay on what leadership means to you
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a student group advisor or professor describing your leadership potential
  • Sophomore or junior standing (i.e. not graduating before the end of the term of board service)
  • Commitment to fulfill the board term of service (one academic year, September through May)
  • No more than one student per campus/institution may participate during any given term
