Furloughs—A 21st Century Word for Pay Cut!

I am amazed that the whole of academe is not outraged by the bureaucratic term “furlough” that is being used to “explain” draconian cuts to higher education. In fact, academics throughout the land should demand transparency in calling a furlough what it is: a temporary layoff (read: no pay for each day furloughed in which a professor is laid off).
