Cultivating a Consultant Culture

Developing a team concept within the constraints of an academic unit can be challenging for many reasons. The very nature of our work encourages a culture of independence and working alone toward individual goals. This independence minimizes the amount of time faculty can gather to discuss common challenges and larger goals for the unit. To be effective in leading the unit toward common goals, a leader must balance the independent nature of our work with a culture in the workplace that promotes hard work, collegiality, teamwork, trust, integrity, empowerment, and contentment, if not true happiness.
