Online Growth Rate Slows to 10-Year Low: Have We Hit the Plateau?

Since 2003, the first year that the Babson Survey Research Group and Sloan-C published their national survey of the state of distance education, the report has shown online learning growing at a faster rate than traditional higher education. Until recently, the rate of that growth has also continually increased. In the last few years, however, distance educators have watched anxiously as the rate of growth slowed. Now in this year’s report, the growth rate of 6.1 percent is the lowest seen in the 11-year history of the study.
