Online Learning That Lasts: Three Ways to Increase Student Engagement & Retention
It is not uncommon for students in online courses to experience one or more of the following frustrations:
“I don’t love the subject, but I have to take this class to graduate.” “I’m not invested in this class because I don’t feel connected with the material, the teacher, or other students.” “I rarely learn anything in this class that I will remember or use after the term ends.” “I am losing motivation to complete assignments or turn in my work on time.”
All these issues can lead to a much larger concern, students who finally conclude, “I don’t care about this class anymore. I’m dropping out.” It is easy to assume that these problems are mostly due to the subject matter. While we can’t always change what needs to be taught, we can always change how we package it.
