Summer Enrichment Course


Session 2: August 4 – September 21, 2019


Infusing Critical Thinking into Your Courses surveys the scholarship on critical thinking and provides a clear path to integrate it into your teaching.

Led by Linda B. Nilson, PhD, founding director of the Office of Teaching Effectiveness and Innovation at Clemson University, this program tackles critical thinking in four stages:

  • Building critical thinking into course design
  • Teaching students to think critically
  • Assessing student learning with objective measures
  • Assessing learning through constructed responses

After completing Infusing Critical Thinking into Your Courses, educators will be able to:

  • Articulate a definition of critical thinking they can apply to courses
  • Establish learning outcomes that incorporate critical thinking
  • Develop classroom activities that teach and advance critical-thinking skills
  • Create and apply meaningful assessment tools for critical-thinking outcomes
  • Know where and how to seek information and resources when they run into challenges

Approximately 9 hours to complete course.


Unit 1: Building Critical Thinking into Your Course Design (2 hours to complete)

  • What is Critical Thinking Anyway?
  • How to Write Critical Thinking Outcomes

Unit 2: Teaching Critical Thinking (2.5 hours to complete)

  • Getting Your Students Started
  • Advancing Your Student Critical Thinking Skills

Unit 3: Assessing Critical Thinking with Objective Items (1.5 hours to complete)

  • Fill-in-the-Blanks, True/False, and Matching Items
  • Multiple Choice and Multiple True-False Items

Unit 4: Assessing Critical Thinking with Constructed Responses (2 hours to complete)

  • Developing Good Constructed Response Questions and Tasks
  • Assessing Constructed Responses with a Rubric


This course is designed for any educator looking to integrate critical thinking into their teaching:

  • Faculty
  • Adjunct faculty
  • Teaching assistants
  • Faculty developers
  • Department chairs


  • At the start of the course, participants receive an email with information on accessing the online course
  • Participants can work through the course at their own pace. Participants can also review information in a previous unit as well as read supplemental materials and watch the accompanying videos as many times as they like within the session dates
  • Upon completion of each program, participants will take an assessment to gauge progress
  • A discussion board brings educators together for an enriching, national conversation about higher education
  • For the duration of the course, participants can use the discussion forum to interact with other participants nationwide and discuss the course content
  • At the end of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion
