Hidden Disabilities: Navigating the Need for Disability Support on Campus

Thursday, April 9, 2020 | 1:00 PM Central | 60 Minutes

Cognitive disabilities are often “hidden”— if not disclosed by the student, then an educator may not be aware of the barriers to learning that exist. This online seminar addresses some of the most common eligible accommodations to assist students with disabilities and how to use these accommodations in the classroom.

What are the learning goals?

Upon completion of this seminar, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the difference between the ADA and IDEA
  • Identify some of the most common accommodations in the college/university setting
  • Characterize what defines an otherwise qualified student in the college/university setting
  • Discern the difference between accommodations and modifications
  • Recognize the role of the Disability Resource Center on campus

Who should attend?

  • Professors and instructors
  • Department chairs
  • Health science instructors
  • Health science administration
  • Disability specialists
  • Academic Success Center staff
  • College/University support staff

Why you don't want to miss this!

This seminar will help instructors address cognitive disabilities and learn the steps necessary to overcome the barriers they present to student success, all while learning crucial topics, such as: understanding the students in their classrooms, why students receive and don’t receive certain accommodations, why educators can’t give accommodations unless they come from the Disability Resource Center, how accommodations are determined, and the differences between accommodations and modifications.

Additional Detail

All students in higher education are expected to manage coursework and personal responsibilities. Students with disabilities can be at a disadvantage without eligible accommodations in place. This session presents information about students with disability-related barriers in a post-secondary environment focusing on students with learning disabilities, ADHD, mental health disorders, and autism; discusses The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) requirements for eligible accommodations; discusses some of the most common eligible accommodations and their application in the classroom and other university settings; and explores the strengths and weaknesses of the fastest-growing population on college campuses: students on the autism spectrum.
