Winter Enrichment Session
December 11, 2023 – January 19, 2024
Critical thinking: It’s the whole point of a college education.
Are students missing it?
Every faculty member has had the experience of reviewing a student paper, only to have it read like a playback of the instructor’s lectures. So many students seem to think the goal is to repeat back everything a teacher has said–as faithfully as possible.
But that’s not what we want. We want them to take the information they receive and do something with it: analyze it, break it down, use it to come to their own conclusions.
Infusing Critical Thinking into Your Course helps faculty light the path for their students towards critical thinking. Delivered in module form, this roughly ten-hour course is led by Linda B. Nelson, PhD, founding director of Clemson University’s Office of Teaching Effectiveness and Innovation.
Nilson provides a definition of critical thinking to use as a framework for creating learning outcomes, then guides participants step-by-step through the creation of classroom tools including:
– Assignments and activities for both beginning and advanced critical thinking
– Assessments with objective items (e.g., multiple choice, fill-in the-blank)
– Assessments with constructed responses, and rubrics to apply to them
The course is self-paced and can be accessed from virtually any device. It also includes a variety of supplemental materials, including handouts, readings, links to online resources, and transcripts. Regular learning checks gauge the command of the material, and a final check leads to a certificate of completion.
We don’t want our students to be mere receptacles of information. We want them to be masters of it —using it to fuel a better understanding of the world around them. Register for Infusing Critical Thinking into Your Course today and discover how to empower your students to think critically!
