One of the toughest things to do is break a bad habit. We’ve all been there before.

When it comes to students, high schools tend to reinforce some unfortunate habits like excuse-making, an indifference to deadlines, an overreliance on handholding, and a focus on grades over learning, among other things. What’s even more troubling is that students often carry those behaviors right into college.

Essentially, as an instructor, you need to help your students break these bad habits before you can get down to the real business of teaching subject matter.

Teaching Underprepared Students can be your guide to enhancing student performance and better preparing your students for the challenges of college and college learning. In this asynchronous five-part course, Brigham Young professors Tyler Griffin and Ken Alford provide a wealth of proven strategies for eliminating bad habits, instilling an appreciation for rigor, and boosting student performance.

This 5-hour idea-filled course will help you:

  • Establish clear expectations and consequences regarding quality and accountability
  • Encourage students to take ownership of their coursework
  • Build engagement by offering choice in assignments and assessments
  • Develop ways to instill respect for deadlines
  • Give students frames of reference for good and bad work
  • Create an environment that makes students comfortable taking risks in learning

This course is designed for asynchronous learning, so you can dive in right away, and pick up or leave off whenever you like, from virtually any device.

The rigors of college work can come as a shock to students used to the more “relaxed” approach of their high school years. Teaching Underprepared Students gives you the tools and techniques necessary to quickly get them acclimated to—and accepting of—college standards.
