In the face-to-face classroom, each faculty member typically designs and teaches their own course with minimal input from departmental colleagues.

Reflective of this approach, many colleges and universities have adopted similar models for their online program (i.e., each faculty member, either alone or in collaboration with an instructional designer, creates and teaches their online course). While this type of autonomy in course design makes sense for the face-to-face classroom, it may be less practical—and less effective—in the context of online education. Simply put, development of a high-quality online course takes considerable time and advanced knowledge of online pedagogy. If multiple faculty members are teaching the same course online (as is often the case with general studies or other high demand courses), it is not an efficient use of departmental time, resources, or compensation to have multiple faculty investing in separate sections of the same course.

To address this issue, this Magna Online Seminar highlights a model for department-wide, collaborative online course design that is particularly relevant for introductory or general studies courses. In this model, multiple department faculty collaborate to design an online course shell that can be modified and adapted by any faculty teaching the class online. The goals driving development of the model include streamline online course development time and resources; ensure quality across all online sections of a course; reallocate faculty time to online teaching activities; create a high-quality online course; and create a course shell that allows for individual faculty to modify and adapt to fit personal preferences.

What are the learning goals?

Upon completion of this seminar, you’ll be able to:

  • Implement a process to collaborate with departmental colleagues to create a shared online course shell for high-demand courses
  • Create departmental policies and procedures to support collaborative online course design
  • Maximize departmental/faculty time and resources in the development of high-quality online courses

Here’s what we’ll cover!

  • Online course design
  • General studies online courses
  • Collaborative course development (department-wide partnership)
  • Course design to address content, introduction to department faculty/courses, and connection to department/campus
  • Timeline/strategies/process for collaboration among multiple faculty
  • Modifiable online course master to be shared by multiple faculty teaching the course
  • Administrative considerations of collaborative online course development (policy, compensation, philosophy, culture, alignment)

Who should attend?

This seminar will benefit:

  • Faculty teaching online
  • Faculty with oversight of online education
  • Department administrators of online programs
  • Instructional designers

Why you don’t want to miss this!

Recognizing the importance of general studies courses and the disconnect that online learners often feel the course was designed to simultaneously promote content learning; introduce students to all the professors in the department; foster excitement about the discipline; and help distance students feel more intimately connected to the academic department. An effective department-wide, collaborative course development process requires culture-building surrounding spirit of online education, policy regarding course ownership, issues surrounding compensation, and guidance for faculty that lack experience in online teaching and learning.
